ANGIE FELT AS if she was floating through open space, and were she to lose her grip on Ericâs arm she would drift off into the black. Sheâd been kissed before, but no kiss had ever made her feel as if every cell in her body was on a serious sugar high.
Eric was the first to pull away, and the way he audibly caught his breath made her smile. It was the most powerful moment sheâd ever felt, surprisingly even more so than when sheâd won her election or when her predecessor had been sentenced to prison time. This was a positive, joyful feeling of power.
âWow,â Eric said, his forehead pressed against hers, their breaths mingling.
Angie laughed softly. âYeah. I second that wow.â
She recalled the conversation with Maya and Sunny about the possibility of her dating and how that simply hadnât been too close on her radar at that point. What had just happened between her and Eric wasnât technically dating, but sheâd enjoyed it immensely and wouldnât mind it happening again.
Eric eased away from her, leaning back against the barn again. One look at him told her the heaviness of the worries weighing on his mind, and she was pretty sure she wouldnât need a background in law enforcement and investigations to figure out what those were. The situation with his dad, the work that still needed to be done around the ranch, taking care of Camille, trying to fit back into a community that thought of him as the person he used to be and not who he was now. As if all of that wasnât enough, Wes and Tyler were making threats and trying to drag him back into that old life. She wouldnât blame him if he left Jade Valley again, never to return, but for her own selfish reasons she hoped he stayed.
She could help make it easier for him to stay.
âWhat do you think about me bringing the puppies over here so that they can play with Camille while you and I are both working?â
Understandably, Eric looked confused by the turn in the conversation. What he didnât know was that there was more to her question than what sheâd asked. He was already concerned about the threat made against her and her associating with him, so she doubted heâd allow her to help with fixing up the ranch house if she came right out and offered. Sometimes help had to be a little sneaky.
âYouâre welcome to bring them over. You took care of Oscar, after all.â
She settled in next to him and looked up at the sky. It was the new moon part of the lunar cycle, so tons of stars were visible.
âWhen you were overseas, did you ever think about how when you looked up at the stars they were the same ones everyone in the world, no matter where they were, saw at night?â
âI did. I even remember the first time I had that thought, lying on the ground in the middle of Afghanistan.
